The open German championship in industrial rope access enters its sixth round. For the second time in a row, it will take place in the climbing hall “No Limit” in Leipzig. On March 12, 2011, the crème de la crème of rope access technicians come together to find out who is best, safest, and most competent working the ropes.
Since the previous year, the organizer FISAT (Professional Organization for Rope-Assisted Work Techniques) has been designing the competition to be as close to work situations as possible. On the one hand, the jury evaluates skill and speed on the ropes at three competition stations. On the other hand, contestants must also master additional tasks from the everyday work of a rope access technician. For the approximately 1,000 spectators at the 2010 championship, one course was particularly popular, the one where all 23 starters, from 5 countries, had to clean a smeared windowpane with water. Here, not only speed counted, but also the result. The jury deducted points for spilled cleaning water and for streaks on the pane. In 2010, the Hungarian Ligeti Márton won the championship cup with consistent performance at all three competition stations. The best German was the Berliner Knut Foppe with place 5.

The world’s leading trade fair for work safety and health took place from 3 to 6 November, again in Düsseldorf. On the fair’s four days, 55,800 professionals attended to gather information from 1,541 exhibitors from 62 countries about the latest trends in the areas of work safety and company health promotion and safety management.
FISAT used this opportunity among other things to demonstrate rope access techniques to profes-sionals at its exhibition stand. But this year, the focus was on FISAT’s multilevel certification system for rope access technicians, offering the greatest possible clarity and safety for users and con-tractors.
On the first day of the trade fair, President Bernd Redlin and General Secretary Frank Seltenheim formally presented the first in the new series of unforgeable photo ID cards. Dirk Otto, company manager for new developments at the suspended platform company Asmus and master electrical engineering technician, completed the basic course in rope-access techniques in October and then passed the subsequent FISAT examination. “After the one-week course, I feel a lot more safe in using rope access techniques,” said the forty-one-year-old recipient of the new ID. For Asmus employees, the course is a supplemental qualification in case a suspended platform suddenly stops working. “In such emergencies, we no longer have to wait for the fire department to come, but can rescue ourselves using rope-access techniques,” says Otto.
